I own a Nikon Coolpix L110 camera which I use from time to time, that is when I don’t forget to charge a set of 4 AA batteries. The camera seems to be very power hungry and the batteries never last very long.
There is a DC power input available on the camera, but instead of using a standard connector type like USB mini or micro, it uses a EH-67 connector. Buying a power supply with this connector crossed my mind, but at 20EUR for an adapter, I thought I’d try to make something myself first.
First, I searched for a piece of cardboard that was thick enough to fit snugly inside the camera’s DC IN input. Next, I used copper tape to create contacts on both sides of the piece of cardboard and soldered two wires on the copper tape. The wires were then connected to a 5V DC power supply I had lying around.
Finally, I inserted the homemade connector in the camera and pressed the ON/OFF button. It worked! And even though it is not as rigid as the real connector, it is good enough to work with at home, to make pictures and videos of my projects without having to remember to charge a set of batteries.
The cardboard connector was good as a proof of concept, but was too fragile for continuous use. I designed a 3D model of the connector and repeated the same process with the copper tape. The result is a much more robust and better looking connector, properly finished with heatshrink tubing.
